Really, there’s not much of a line drawn between the worlds we create on paper and real life. The problem we tend to have is we don’t focus much on what really sings to us in our own lives, our own real worlds. It’s easy to filter out all the garbage we go through on paper when we create our fantasies, our plots, our stories. In essence, the books we write are our lives seen through a new pair of contact lenses. We see things clearly.
Again, though, really, there isn’t much of a difference. We just have to see things…differently.
We’re surrounded by miracles. We’re surrounded by chances. We’re surrounded by dreams. Dreams that we can catch. We just have to believe we can…. An Eye can See, people. Seriously.
After seeing my own dream make its way to me, signing a contract for THE CAIN LETTERS and knowing that by the end of the year, I will have entered the world with my face and words for all to see and read, it’s easy to see.
But that’s not even the main reason why I’m writing this post to you right now…. Again, let me repeat: an Eye can See.
I’ve been horribly nearsighted since I was maybe 7 years old. They gave me these clunky glasses that I always ended up breaking somehow. I was teased, too. After awhile, I got used to it. Then I mustered the courage to deal with contact lenses. For awhile, it was a novelty. But let me tell you, having to reach in and remove them every night became quite the crutch. I needed these things to see. To see the world. Sometimes my eyes itched and burned, but I dealt with it. It gave me my sight back.
Remember when I said “surrounded by miracles”? “Surrounded by dreams”? Well…I’m not one for technology being the quiet god over true humanity, but it certainly has its place in our lives. And it certainly gave me a place in my life. A place I thought I could never experience….
I did, indeed, just yesterday, have my Lasik surgery done.
And for the first time since I was a little boy…I could read a book without needing help. I’m writing this right now…without help. My Eyes can See…. They can See.
This tells me that even the Navy can’t hold me back. Bring it on, I’m ready. There’s another dream for you reborn. There’s another chance not gone away. I thought it would slip away. But it hasn’t. Anything’s possible. And the possible can give you anything your heart desires.
You writers out there, dreamers, artists, whatever, whoever you are…don’t give up. Keep going. The things you miss, the things you lose, the hardships you endure: they’ll pass. I promise. And very soon You will See. Just like my Eyes do….
