I’m a sucker for research, and quite frankly, it’s been awhile on Writing and Reading since I’ve written a post about a particular in-depth topic of literary quality and/or content. As it does say…”Writing and Reading”, you know? I can’t always be writing posts about sheer randomness and oddities and utter craziness–
OFF THE BED, CHUCK STAKE, AND PUT YOUR CLOTHES ON!
Back to the topic–
ROMANCE
Cue in regal Victorian music and give me a picture of that heavily busty-dressed buxom blonde struggling to breathe, causing her boobage to rise and fall like the waves of the ocean.
Yes, the romance genre of literature.
In my early years as a budding English major, I burned through all those literature classes studying Shakespeare and Sydney and the Earl of Surrey and Marlowe and the Beowulfs and Homers of classicism–
And NEVER realized that, in truth, the romance genre essentially started with those particular elements–elements of fantasy, usually regarding a chivalrous knight saving a fair maiden. As always was the case, love conquers evil. Hence, in these literary works, there was an ‘evil’ to be thwarted to save the princess or the kingdom or the town or whatever so that the knight or pauper or prince or heavily-clad barbarian could then pull in the pretty damsel and plant a big kiss on her sweet face. The End. (End credits and cue in epic soundtrack).
Such works originating the genre include King Horn, Robert the Devil, Emare and Havelok the Dane.
How diverse the genre was! Who would’ve thought the whole basis for that sleazy beach read that Chuck Stake likes so much originated from such classic literature?
Romance even took a turn into more gothic elements, presenting darker images, elements of horror and terrifying drama, such as Bram Stoker’s DRACULA. Yes, that same blood-sucking vampire we all love. Yes, he was a romantic guy. He had to be if he could convince a girl to let him suck on their necks.
The genre transcended any staple or covered box with a label pretty easy, and the only way I can think that that would happen is simply this:
Romance is something we all long for. We’re human. We all hope to fall in love. We all hope to have that fuzzy feeling in our chest, the sweaty palms, the sleepless nights. We all dream of being swept off our feet. We’re self-destructive like that. It’s in our nature.
So, naturally, the romance genre continues to be one of the most long-lived, popular genres in literature and film today! In all its forms, too. Erotic romance, classic romance, epic romance, romantic comedy, romantic tragedy, horror romance, romantic drama. You name it.
We love it.
Nothing illustrates that more than this trailer, I think enjoy. And remember…oh, yeah, baby…to give a passionate kiss to the other in your life who always makes your heart race…you know it, baby. Enjoy.
