For those who are still skeptical that a significant chunk of the publishing industry market will evolve into the digital world, keep in mind a few things:

1. iPods

2. Smartphones

3. eReader

4. Amazon Kindle

Now why are these four things so important? Let me first stress that the last two are only purely recent developments regarding the industry–

They deal specifically with books.

But look at the bigger picture here. How many students out there in grade school, high school, college, you think have their own iPod? How about a smartphone? Blackberry? Palm Pilot? What about laptops? How about online classes? Virtual classes?

Let’s talk about the MySpaces, Facebooks and Twitter monsters, too. And that’s only three of them. There’s actually probably a dozen more applications out there on the web–

It’s called social media.

How can anyone deny that this won’t even affect the publishing industry?

Don’t get me wrong, though–those good ol’ paper books will still be around. And in fact, they’ll be more valuable than they should be.

But let’s face it–the digital age is coming. Being an editor with digital knowledge and skills is crucial. Being an author with digital knowledge and skills is paramount.

I got to thinking about that specifically because even now it’s affecting the small publications industry–magazines, journals, periodicals etc etc.. If you don’t have any skills regarding social digital media, you’re stuck. Period.

Check out this video and absorb it. Have a nice day.
